TD Bank and the High Line Launch ‘High Line Honey’ to Produce Sustainable Honey, Highlight the Environmental Importance of Bees The High Line will be buzzing on Saturday, Oct. 21 with a free community program featuring honey tastings, local flower exhibitions, enclosed beehive, and educational programs
NEW YORK CITY – October 17, 2017 – Friends of the High Line and TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, and the corporate sponsor of the High Line, today announced a new yearlong initiative called High Line Honey that will produce sustainable honey from rooftop beehives in the Chelsea neighborhood and highlight the vital role that bees play in sustaining the planet's food supply and ecosystems. To celebrate the launch of High Line Honey, the public and park visitors are invited to a free, family-friendly program on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the High Line that will feature an enclosed beehive buzzing with thousands of bees, free honey tastings, exhibitions showcasing local indigenous flowers representing New York City neighborhoods, and educational sessions with a local beekeeper. The celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 14th Street Passage on the High Line, located between 9th and 10th Avenues. Local honey will also be available for purchase at the event, with all proceeds benefitting the High Line. High Line Honey is expected to produce between 100 to 150 pounds of honey from rooftop beehives tended by Andrew Coté (of Andrew’s Honey) in the Chelsea neighborhood where the High Line is located. The honey will be harvested and sold at the High Line next summer to help support the park. Like other honey produced by Coté, High Line Honey will be 100 percent pure, raw, local, unheated and kosher honey. To maintain its health benefits, the honey will be filtered only by using cheesecloth, and it will not be pasteurized. "Honeybees are essential for the future of the planet because they pollinate flowering plants, including those that produce many of the foods that we eat," Coté said. "I'm thrilled to be part of this project because High Line Honey will produce local, sustainable honey that will also benefit the High Line's non-profit mission." "TD Bank is delighted to partner with Friends of the High Line in supporting the launch of High Line Honey, which we hope will generate buzz about the importance of nurturing urban green spaces that provide a natural habitat for bees and a place where people can connect with nature," said Joe Doolan, Head of Environmental Affairs, TD Bank.
"TD Bank’s support of green initiatives like High Line Honey is a natural fit with our commitment to conservation and the need for public spaces that help foster a strong community and neighborhood," said Friends of the High Line Co-Founder & Executive Director Robert Hammond. "We're proud to partner with TD Bank on the program's launch and look forward to next summer's High Line Honey harvest."
